Choosing and caring for garden tools

Good garden tools last a lifetime when they are well made and well cared for. This guide helps you pick the essentials and keep them sharp.

The essentials

Most gardens need a pair of secateurs, a hand trowel, a hand fork, a spade or border fork, and a pair of gloves. Add shears, a hori-hori or a weeding tool as your garden grows.

Steel

Carbon steel takes a very sharp edge and is easy to resharpen but needs oiling to prevent rust. Stainless steel resists rust and is easier to keep clean but is harder to sharpen.

Care

Clean soil and sap off after use, dry the blades, and wipe them with a little oil. Sharpen secateurs and blades regularly with a whetstone or file. Store tools dry, and oil wooden handles once a season.
