A good throw is warm, soft and lasts for decades. Here is what to look for in fibre, weave and size — and how to care for it.
Fibre
Lambswool is soft and warm, merino is finer and lighter, and alpaca and mohair add loft and sheen. Linen and cotton throws are cooler and suit summer.
Size
A sofa throw is typically around 130 × 170 cm. Larger blankets around 140 × 200 cm or more cover a bed or wrap two people.
Care
Wool needs little washing: air it outdoors and brush it gently. When needed, hand wash or use a wool programme with wool detergent, and dry flat. Always follow the care label.
