ESTABLISHED 2018 IN HANKO, THE SOUTHERNMOST TOWN IN FINLAND
Cigale & Fourmi is a shop by lovers of beautiful things, for lovers of beautiful things. It was born out of a love for ceramics, a desire to create cherished memories, and a vision to complement the unique seaside atmosphere of Hanko. Since then, we have grown from a small ceramic shop into a destination celebrated for its exceptional product range, its ambiance, and an experience that stays with you. One thing has never changed: the quality of what we choose to sell.
Born out of a love for ceramics
It all started when the founders, Anna and Christian, began importing ceramics in 2018. The first shop quickly brimmed with exquisitely crafted traditional ceramics from Italy, France, and other parts of Europe — pieces that were hard to find in Finland.
The ceramic-filled shop offered something novel, and it attracted admiration and interest. The initial location soon grew too small, prompting the search for a new one. We wanted somewhere unique and intriguing, where visitors could have a more complete experience — a place where ceramics could shine, and where people could relish their time amidst beautiful things.
A pavilion by the sea
The choice fell on an old pavilion in the heart of beautiful Hanko. Through renovation, the pavilion was transformed into an immersive store, allowing visitors to briefly escape the rush of daily life. A visit to the Pavilion is meant to be an experience in itself — a moment to immerse yourself in design, atmosphere, and the quiet charm of a seaside town.
Cigale & Fourmi was founded in Hanko because the city offers a wholly unique atmosphere and ambiance. The aim was to bring something fresh and meaningful to the city — and the story of the Hanko Pavilion continues to evolve alongside us.
Beyond ceramics
As the store grew, an opportunity arose to look beyond ceramics. Today our selection includes thoughtfully curated design objects that bring aesthetics, genuine joy, and happiness into everyday life. The pavilion and the online store offer character-filled utility and decorative items that, at their finest, evoke memories and emotions.
Every product is meticulously chosen to align with our values: traditional, timeless, high-quality, yet playful design. The concept is to offer something unique for the home, the garden, and even the shore. Ceramics remain at the core of the business — everything else complements them, from decorative details for the interior to garden tools that help you create beautiful plantings in our pots.
From Hanko to the world
Since those early days, Cigale & Fourmi has expanded to Espoo, hosted pop-up events, and ventured online, where our carefully curated range has delighted customers around the world. Cigale & Fourmi is the realisation of a dream that has been meticulously worked on for years, down to the smallest details. The heart of the company remains in Hanko, but the quest for beautiful products and experiences extends far beyond its borders. Looking ahead, we will continue to grow and evolve.
